A LANGUAGE OF THE HEART: a workshop based on Nonviolent Communication (NVC) led by Reena Ginwala

"Your presence is the most precious gift you can give to another human being."

~ Marshall Rosenberg

Language, words and nonverbal communication form a very important part of human inter-actions. NVC helps us be real, engage with authenticity with an intention to connect. We see disagreements or disconnects as opportunities to engage with curiosity, empathy and openness to outcome.

Through its emphasis on deep listening—to ourselves as well as others—NVC helps us discover the depth of our own compassion. This language reveals the awareness that all human beings are only trying to honour universal values and needs, every minute, every day. NVC can be seen as both a spiritual practice that helps us see our common humanity, and a clear set of skills which help us create life-serving communities.

This workshop is based on NVC to enrich the depth and width of our lived experiences with life serving processes. Let us heal our pain, grow our resilience and embody healthy interdependence. Through role-plays, reflections and deep listening we shall explore vulnerability as courage.

Session 1: Empathy to Self, Others and Honest Expression - cultivating the quality of compassionate presence which brings a sense of well-being and reassures us that we matter.

Session 2: Transformative Power of Anger - seeing anger as a resource and energy to guide us to live our values fuelling clear next steps to the change we wish to see within and around us. Anger also brings up guilt and shame which give us a chance for beneficial regret. This supports deep healing and inner freedom.

Session 3: Healthy Relationship with Conflict - conflict is scary and often we hear ourselves and others say we hate confrontations and tend to avoid them. Why is it so? Is there a way to live a resilient interdependent existence without engaging with conflicts? When did we start seeing conflicts as bad? How can we connect to those whom we have conflict with? NVC helps us open up to new possibilities in conflicts to recover connection and creative strategies to meet mutual needs..

[NVC evolved from concepts used in person-centered therapy, and was developed by clinical psychologist Marshall Rosenberg in early 1960s.]
