Shweta-Tara Katti will speak from her personal experience of transforming the many challenges that life has thrown her way and her encounters with deep compassion that she found in her community.

ABOUT SHWETA

Shweta Katti grew up and studied in Kamathipura, Asia's most infamous red-light area, her entire life. In 2012, she joined Kranti, an NGO which empowers girls from Mumbai's red-light areas to become agents of social change. Due to her work for marginalized girls and her community, Shweta was named a "25-Under-25 Women to Watch" by Newsweek in 2013. At 18, she received a full scholarship from Bard College in New York, becoming the first girl from an Indian red-light area ever to study abroad. In 2014, she was the recipient of many awards, including the UN Youth Courage Award for Education. In 2015, she won a full scholarship to Semester at Sea, a university on a ship where she sailed to 10 countries in 5 months as a Presidential Scholar.

In 2016, Shweta took a break from her formal studies to intern at Ashoka Changemakers for six months as well and also complete a six month course in Social Entrepreneurship in Boulder, Colorado. In 2018, Shweta returned to formal studies but decided to change her focus from psychology to a full time program in Buddhist Philosophy and Contemplative Psychology. She now studies on full scholarship in Italy.
